Orange County was thinking big before oranges became its signature crop. The name was proposed in 1872, when citrus was still a promise rather than the region’s dominant industry. It offered a sunny image of a place where a new life could take root.

After nearly 20 years of efforts to form a separate county, Orange County began operating on August 1, 1889. Previously, this land belonged to Los Angeles County. The citrus industry later grew into a major part of the economy, helping the region live up to its ambitious name.

The historic courthouse photo is a glimpse of the county that followed: established, growing and building an identity of its own. Today, we might introduce OC through its beaches or famous attractions. Its name still carries that earlier sense of possibility. Next time someone asks where you live, you have a little history to go with the answer.
